Additional Costs

Books

The books required for the NFC program are carefully selected to provide a useful background on the many cooking techniques and food preparations covered in the program and provide a useful ongoing reference library for Natural Food Chef graduates.

Students purchase books independently; NTI does not sell books. The cost of books varies considerably depending on where they are purchased. There are online book vendors that offer used books at discount prices.

Book lists are distributed to students when payment and enrollment forms for NFC program have been received. Budget approximately $200-$300 for books for the full program.

Knives

In week 3 of the program, students are required to purchase three knives from a vendor of their choosing.  Do not purchase knives prior to starting the program, as you will have a chance to demo knives and receive instruction on what to look for in the quality and style of knives.  Costs vary depending on the brand of the knives but range from $100 to $400.  Books and knives remain the property of the student.

Other

Shoes: Students are expected to own sturdy, non-slip shoes to protect themselves during cooking classes.

ServSafe® Certification: Students are required to take an online food safety certification training course called ServSafe; the cost is $20-$25.

At-home equipment: Equipment for personal home kitchens will be at the student’s discretion and own expense. This is an optional expense and will be discussed in the Kitchen Organization and Equipment class.

Optional: All NFC graduates are eligible to apply for the certification as a Personal Chef through national organizations. The cost, paid directly to the United States Personal Chef Association (USPCA) or the American Personal & Private Chef Association (APPCA), is $695-895.
